This is the end of the story and out of the flashback.

Mattie wakes up before everyone else and counts the money she has earned: $31.25. She leaves the attic with her bag in one hand and the letters in another. She placed the letters on Mr. Morrison's desk. She gave Pa $2, the rest he owed on Licorice, and told him she would write often, she wrote Weaver's mamma and gave her $12.70 to pay off Emmie's taxes, and gave Royal back his ring and said he was sorry and that she hoped he would have his dream cheese factory one day. She finds Grace's hat and puts it next to her body. Mattie then throws stones at the house where the men sleep and gets Weaver out. She tells him that she is leaving, that his mom would be alright because Emmie's taxes are payed for, and gives him $7 to ride the train to New York. They hug eachother and both almost cry. She said she was leaving becasue Grace Brown couldn't She got a ride on the Clearwater and goes to the train. Some reporters see the undersheriff and say that this wasn't a regular drowning, and she pictures it. He hits her, knocking her unconcious, and then tips the boat, drowning her. He wasn't dead, and he would get away with it. And she boards the train to her future in New York city.
