A Northern Light Chapter 39 Summary

This chapter takes place in the flashback.

Today is the Fourth of July, and the Glenmore throws a huge party every year. Anyone could come, but you had to pay. Royal had 2 pies that he was bringing Mattie, people had their eyes on them and that made her feel special. Martha Miller gave Mattie a sour look. Minnie has found out about Mattie and Royal. Ada's brother had overhead a fight with Martha Miller and said that it was Royal, how he had overcome heartbreak fast. He said that he went to go talk to one guy that wasn't even there. Lou cut all of her hair off, now she looks like a boy because she was mad. Royal said he was talking to Tommy who was over there and calms her suspicions. Royal tells her that her dad shouldn't clear the land because there are blueberry patches. When the girls were talking about her getting married, Martha Miller barges in and says that he was just marrying her because of the land (he was the 2nd oldest) and could get some of his dad's, her dad's, and the Hubbard's farm. Mattie confronts him and asks if he is going to buy the land and he says that he is the interested party.
