This chapter takes place in the flashback.
Mattie got a package from Ms. Wilcox. It was 2 books and 1 album of her poems. In a letter that came along with them said that she was leaving. She rushed downstairs and asked if she could go and talk to her, but it was right before dinner and she needed to be here, Weaver said he would go with her and they would be back by 6. When they got to her house, she was packing and told her that her husband was serious about his threat. And he was on his way and could get her medicine that could make her forget how to write and who she was. She was going to go hideout at her sisters and use the money she was left by her grandmother and sell her truck and jewlery to go to Paris, and try to get a divorce from there. Mattie then had to tell her that she wasn't going to go to Barnard because Royal had asked her to marry him and she had said yes. Then she told Weaver and he went on and on about how she was too good for him, and was baffled. She wished she was as strong as Weaver to go to New York City, but she wasn't.
