Mattie is reading another one of Grace's letters, talking about her mother. The Mattie begins to think about her mom, and how she miss the taste of happiness in her strawberry jam. And the talks they had about how she should stay pure till the day she marries. And she thought about how much Grace must've loved Chested to give it up. She asked her mom how she knew when Pa loved her, and her mom answered, it was the things he did. And she knew that Royal loved her, she knew all along.
