This takes place in the flashback.
Royal picked up Mattie at the Glenmore and brought her to Minnie's house. Mattie was obsessing over the poem by Emily Dickinson, that she couldn't listen to Royal talking about corn on the way there. Whe they got there and he dropped her off, telling her that he would be back in 2 hours to pick her up, but she has yet to believe that he is her's and that he will stay with her rather than going off with Martha. When she went inside Minnie's, the place was a mess, so was Minnie, having to deal with the twins and Jim's 4 work friends that were helping him. She was sleep-deprived and defensive. When Minnie and the babies fell asleep, Mattie cleaned up the house, just in time to when Royal got there, she didn't get a chance to talk to Minnie about him or Barnard, but another time I guess. She then snuggled up with him, and felt safe.
