Mattie couldn't stnad to be in the kitchen any longer, so she made an excuse that she forgot to lock the barn door, but runs to the eastern edge of her property to where her mother was buried. She had been reading too much since the organizing with Ms. Wilcox. When she read a poet named Emily Baxter's poems they made her head hurt because of how she was thinking about things she wasn't supposed to and she wanted to be apart of that world. Even if it mean leaving her sisters, friends, and Royal Loomis. She thought about her good memories of her mom singing and reading to them, but then the bad ones came and she tells the reader that the promise she made to her mother was to care for her sisters and never leave.
