This chapter takes place in the flashback.

A bunch of Mattie's friends and her had gotten away from chores and responsibility and were deciding where to go when Royal Loomis pulled up and took Mattie away, they went boating. On the boat he talked about farming and what he wanted to do and how he was saving up money for when he was on his own in a poetic manner. Mattie had never heard him talk this much. Then she started talking about grades, exams, and college and he still didn't understand why she wanted to go and read about other people's lives when she had a perfectly good one. He kissed her, and she kissed him back. and he moved his hands to her breasts wher she told him to stop or she would jump out of the boat. He said it was okay because they were sparking, basically dating, and she thought him and Martha Miller were together. He told her why else did he help plow her fields, or taken her boating, or kissed her when her cow got out. He kissed her again. And she said that she wanted her own story, no one else's which could mean she wanted to stay with Royal and not go to New York based on what he had said earlier.
