Back when she is working at the Glenmore.
Hamlet, a Great Dane belonging to a hotel guest (Mr. Phillip Preston Palmer) is Mattie's responsibility for an extra dollar a week. She feeds and walks him. Mattie still has Grace's letters and was planning to place a few stones in them and throw them in the lake rather than burning them on her walk with Hamlet, however she is enterupted by Weaver who came to look at the couple's that drowned boat that the Zilpha had towed in. He makes a joke about Royal, either suggesting that over the missed time the two of them are dating or he is just teasing. He also mentions that he hates the Glenmore, it kills everything.
