This chapter takes place before she begins working at the Glenmore.
Mr. Eckler the driver and owner of a boat that is a store and a library, that goes up and down the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Lakes. Mattie got a book (checked it out from the library) the House of Mirth by Mrs. Wharton, some cornmeal for her family, and a composition notebook of which she got the money from picking fiddleheads with Weaver and Minnie. When she was leaving Royal Loomis was passing by and asked her if she would like a ride home on his Buck board. Mr. Eckler also told Mattie to tell her Pa that he wanted to buy milk from him, but the Glenore and Higby's and the Waldheim and the Eagle Bay but he was worried that he wouldn't have enough milk for all of them. On the way home Royal and Mattie had a slight argument over literature, Royal didn't like it. To prove hispoint that real experiences were better than reading a novel he made the horses on the buckboard go super fast which mad the comp. fall and the book she checked out which dented the spine. Afterwards he felt her heartbeat and told her that she couldn't get that kind of a rush from a book. The reader is knowing that she has a crush on him by now however, I don't think Mattie does.
