This chapter, still in the flashback, takes place in the classroom with Weaver, the Loomis boys, Abby, Mattie, and Mrs. Wilcox.

Mrs. Parrish, their original teacher, believed that Mattie and Weaver were smart enough to earn highschool diplomas but the closest highschool was 10 miles away. When Mrs. Parrish left, Mrs. Wilcox took over and since then she has been teaching Weaver and Mattie the material.

Miss Wilcox thought that her parents should know so when her mom was sick she went to go and talk and when she was done her mothertold Mattie that she was going to get a diploma even though Pa wanted her to leave school.

The exams are coming up, and Weaver's excpeptance is contigent on him getting b+ or higher on all of them and as for Mattie she just had to get her diploma. Weaver got his letter in January and in mid-April Mattie's came, along with a scholarship to Barnard College (a full ride that can be renewed every year).

Along with this tremendous feeling of joy came sadness as she began to remember the stubborness of her father and the unnamed promise she made to her mother that wouldn't let her go if she had all of the money in the world, but they didn't and she had no way of getting any since Pa didn't let her work at the Glenmore during the coming summer.
