This story takes place on peaceful, perfect day at the Glenmore hotel, the finest on all of Big Moose Lake, on Thursday, July 12, 1906. We are introduced to Ada Bouhard and Mattie (the main character) who are believed to work there, at the hotel. As well as Cook and Mr. Crabb, and Mr. Sperry (the owner). The main character is also made out to be a very intelligent individual, who keeps to herself often. The Zilpha was a boat which a young couple tipped the following evening and they have only found the girl, cold, wet, and bruised, still unconcious and no sign of the man she was with, his name: one of the two mentioned: Carl Grahm or Chester Gillette. In the chapter, the main character catches sight of a pile of letters tied with a blue ribbon that she promised to burn, addressed to Chester Gillette, and as she corrects the name aloud, suspicions rise: Did she see anything? Does she know anything? . . .
